Cordura, Ballistic Nylon, or Something Else? A Buyer's Guide to Picking Fabric by Scenario
I'm the office administrator for a 45-person bag and outdoor-gear company. I manage 60 to 80 material orders a year—fabric, webbing, hardware—roughly $350,000 in purchases spread across 8 vendors. I report to both operations and finance, so I live in the middle: design asks for a premium build, accounting asks for a better price, and I get to explain why fabric A can't always do fabric B's job.
The first thing I learned after taking over purchasing in 2020 is that there is no single best all-purpose fabric. A backpack that gets thrown onto concrete and an RV awning that bakes in the sun for years are not the same problem. Different problems need different materials.
Most requests I deal with fall into four buckets:
- A bag or piece of gear needs to survive abrasion and impact.
- Straps or webbing need to survive sun and weather.
- You're replacing a cover—like changing RV awning fabric.
- You need actual waterproofing, not just a tough-sounding fabric.
Here's how I sort it out.
Scenario 1: The surface is going to hit concrete, curbs, and conveyor belts
If you're building a backpack, duffel, or daily carry bag, Cordura is usually my first reference point. CORDURA fabric is high-tenacity nylon available in 500D, 1000D, and 1680D constructions. I trust it for the same reason most gear brands do: it has decades of field testing behind it, not just a polished spec sheet.
A few years ago, our designer brought in a Supreme Cordura backpack as a reference sample. It's easy to see streetwear hype, but what impressed us was the fabric. The bottom of that bag had clearly been dragged around, yet the base was still intact. That's why Cordura shows up in the product description.
What does ballistic nylon Cordura mean?
People ask me about ballistic nylon Cordura a lot. Ballistic describes a thick, dense weave, not a bulletproof guarantee. Ballistic weave fabric was originally made for military flak gear in WWII. Cordura is the brand that certifies the yarns and construction. When I order 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon, I'm getting a heavy basket-style weave from an approved mill. It's still my default for messenger bags and roller luggage.
Denier is not the whole story
Here's the part that surprises newer buyers: 1680D is not automatically tougher than 1000D. Denier only tells you the thickness of the yarn. Weave density, base yarn quality, and finish matter just as much. A well-constructed 500D Cordura can outlast a generic 1680D nylon in abrasion tests. Compare test data, not just the number.
That's how I learned to test. Last year I approved a roll from a broker who listed it as '1000D Cordura'. I knew I should request a hand sample before cutting, but I thought, what are the odds? The weave was wrong. It failed faster than standard 1000D in our abrasion tests, and part of a batch was already cut. That was about $1,900 down the drain. Now any unfamiliar lot gets a physical sample first, no exceptions.
Scenario 2: Straps and webbing are going to sit in the sun
When people ask me about straps, they usually assume the same logic applies as the face fabric. It doesn't. A strap's job is different: it sits in direct sunlight, gets splashed with water, and rubs against hardware. UV and mildew kill ordinary nylon webbing over time. That's why I keep sunbrella webbing as a separate spec in our system.
Sunbrella webbing is solution dyed, which means the color is built into the fiber instead of sitting on the surface. It holds color and structure in harsh sun and wet conditions far better than a standard strap. I use it for outdoor furniture, boat bags, and exterior straps on gear that will live outside.
This isn't an either/or choice. I've ordered Cordura 1000D panels with Sunbrella webbing on the same product. The Cordura handles abrasion. The Sunbrella handles sun exposure. Each material solves a different failure point.
Scenario 3: You're changing RV awning fabric, not redesigning a backpack
When someone starts searching for changing RV awning fabric, it usually means the current canopy has failed. First decide whether you're repairing or replacing. A small tear can often be patched or re-sewn. If the material has gone brittle, lost its coating, or pulled away from the hardware, replacement is the answer.
RV awning replacement is mostly a measuring job. You need the roller length, the canopy drop, and the hem allowance that locks into the rail channel. I know people who order by guessing from the old piece, but hem details vary. If you're not sure, pull the old fabric out carefully and measure it with the hem in place. And if the awning is spring loaded, don't release that stored tension unless you know the manufacturer's procedure. That step can hurt you.
Then choose by climate, not just price. Coated vinyl is more waterproof and often cheaper, but it can stiffen and crack after years of sun exposure. Solution-dyed acrylic such as Sunbrella fabric breathes, resists mildew, and handles UV better, so I'd choose acrylic for hot or humid regions. Vinyl might be the better first choice in a rainy climate where the awning is rolled up most of the year.
One more thing: don't spec a high-denier pack fabric for an awning canopy just because it feels strong. Cordura is excellent for abrasion, but an awning's failure modes are UV, mildew, and water. That's a different material decision.
Scenario 4: You need waterproofing, and what about moleskin?
The question I hear from teams thinking about linings and trousers is: is moleskin fabric waterproof? Short answer: no. Moleskin is a dense, brushed cotton. It's wind resistant and tough for workwear, but it's still cotton. Left untreated, it soaks through. A waxed moleskin will shed a light shower for a while, but it is not a waterproof membrane, and the stitched seams will wet out first.
If the product genuinely has to keep water out, choose a system, not just a fabric. For bags, I order Cordura nylon with a PU coating or TPU laminate, then seam-seal the construction. The base fabric alone doesn't make anything waterproof. Coatings, laminates, zippers, and seam sealing do. If a supplier says 'it's Cordura, so it's waterproof', that's a red flag.
It's also a legal flag. Per FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing, accessed April 2025), performance claims like 'waterproof' must be truthful and substantiated. In my job, that means keeping test data before putting a claim on any product page.
So which one should you order?
Use the failure mode as your shortcut. If the part takes repeated abuse and abrasion, Cordura is the right conversation. If it's a strap that will live in the sun, try Sunbrella webbing. If you're replacing an awning, compare coated vinyl with acrylic for your specific climate. If you need dry contents, specify a coated or laminated fabric and seal the seams.
- Lighter but tough? 500D Cordura.
- Maximum edge scuffing? 1000D Cordura.
- Heavy, old-school feel? 1680D ballistic nylon Cordura.
If you're still not sure, ask for samples. In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, moving to a sample-first process cut our sourcing turnaround from five days to two and removed most of the 'it looked fine online' surprises. Finance liked that. Design liked that. My job got a lot less stressful.
Bottom line: I still buy plenty of Cordura, but I don't buy it because it's famous. I buy it when abrasion is the real enemy. Every fabric order should start with the same question: what is this product going to fail from first? Once you name that, the material choice gets a lot easier.
There's something satisfying about watching a new roll pass the test it was chosen for. After the chaos of my first year in purchasing, that simple routine—name the failure mode, choose the material, test it—took the stress out of the job.
