The Cordura Order Checklist: 5 Steps to Avoid Costly Fabric Mistakes
If you’re buying Cordura fabric for a production run, this checklist is for you. I’ve been a materials procurement lead for six years, handling Cordura orders for bags, workwear, and footwear. I’ve personally made (and documented) four significant mistakes, totaling roughly $14,000 in wasted budget. Now this checklist sits on our team’s wall, and it has caught 20 potential errors in the past 12 months.
There are five steps. Use them before you place your next order.
Quick note: if you’re choosing a light blue duvet cover or comparing modal vs. polyester for a t-shirt, this isn’t the checklist for you. Cordura is a performance fabric for abrasion-heavy products. The selection criteria are different. But if your product needs to survive scrapes, dragging, and daily abuse, keep reading.
Step 1: Verify the Cordura license and proper labeling
The first mistake I made was in 2018. I trusted a supplier who claimed to sell “genuine Cordura.” The face fabric felt right, the weight seemed right. But when our client asked for official Cordura hangtags, the supplier couldn’t provide them. The fabric wasn’t licensed.
What most people don’t realize is that Cordura is a registered trademark of INVISTA, not a generic nylon type. A mill can make high-tenacity nylon, but unless it’s produced by an authorized licensee or carries the official Cordura tape, you can’t label it Cordura. Put another way: it might be great nylon, but it’s not Cordura.
Checkpoint: Ask your supplier for a licensing certificate or a letter of authorization. Request a sample roll label. Look for the Cordura label on the roll core, not just the sewn-in tags. On large orders, ask for the ship-to address from the authorized mill—if it doesn’t align, dig deeper.
Step 2: Specify denier, weave, and finish
Here’s something vendors won’t tell you: the term “Cordura” doesn’t automatically define a fabric. It’s a family of high-tenacity nylon fabrics. You still have to specify 500D, 1000D, 1680D, ripstop vs. plain weave vs. twill, and the final finish.
For example, the Ariat Rebar insulated jacket uses a Cordura ripstop shell. That’s a relatively tight weave that resists snags without feeling like armor. If you ordered a “Cordura shell” without specifying ripstop and DWR, you might get a 1000D plain weave that’s heavier and stiffer—and it could ruin the drape and comfort.
I learned this the expensive way. We ordered 1000D Cordura for a line of backpacks, but I didn’t specify the weave. We received a heavy twill that was too rough for the client’s screen-printed logo. The result? 800 yards of fabric that printed poorly, $1,800 wasted, and a one-week delay. Since then, we write down: base denier, weave, coating, weight in GSM, width, and elongation if it’s critical.
Checkpoint: Fill in a spec sheet for every line item. Don’t accept a quote that only says “Cordura 1000D.” Ask for an actual technical datasheet.
Step 3: Test your own assembly, not just the fabric
This is the step most people skip. You can buy a beautiful Cordura fabric and still create a broken product. Why? Because your seams, edge treatment, and laminating process can undermine the textile.
In September 2022, we had a footwear upper made from a Cordura fabric similar to what New Balance uses in some of their sneaker uppers. The raw fabric passed abrasion tests. After we applied a hot-melt film to stiffen the upper, the abrasion resistance dropped. We had already cut 700 pairs.
That order ended up being reworked, and the technical problem was traced to how the film’s heat affected the yarn coating. I had two days to decide whether to proceed. Normally I’d do a full wear test, but with the production slot looming, we relied on lab data. In hindsight, we should have at least run a modified Taber test on a sample with the film. Don’t let that be you.
Checkpoint: Build a pre-production sample using the exact production process, then run your own abrasion and tear tests. If you don’t have equipment, send it to a third-party lab. It isn’t paranoia; it’s a $3,000 insurance policy.
Step 4: Get the color right before production
Color is another classic trap. Dye lots differ, and screen calibration lies. In 2021, a client requested a light blue custom color for their product. We agreed to production based on a digital Pantone reference. We ended up with 300 fabric pieces that were, in the words of our customer, “closer to mint than sky blue.” We had to re-dye or scrap them, and a $2,200 order vanished quickly.
Now we require a physical lab dip under standardized light (D65) and a spectrophotometer tolerance. The same applies even if you’re ordering a stock Cordura color—match the batch by lot number from the same run.
Checkpoint: Ask for a lab dip or cutting sample. Set a ΔE tolerance (<1.5 is typical for brand colors) and an AATCC colorfastness rating of at least 4. Have your factory measure the production lot and report readings before cutting.
Step 5: Look at the full product system
The last step is about everything else. A bag or jacket is a system, not a single fabric. If you order genuine Cordura but pair it with cheap webbing, a weak zipper, or poor seam construction, the end user will see a failed product—and they won’t blame the webbing or the zipper; they’ll blame the brand.
In other words, quality perception is built by the weakest component. I once designed a tactical pack with a 1000D Cordura body, but the strap webbing pulled from the seam because the sewing spec used 0.5 mm spacing instead of 0.7 mm. The fabric didn’t fail; the assembly did. But from the customer’s perspective, the brand failed.
Checkpoint: List every component: zippers, webbing, buckles, thread, padding, coating, and even edge binding. Review their performance specs relative to the Cordura shell. If possible, pull-test the assembled product.
Final fine print
A few lessons I had to learn the hard way:
- Don’t assume waterproof is a fabric property. Unless the Cordura fabric is paired with a waterproof coating or laminate (e.g., PU/PVC/TPU) and sealed seams, it will leak. If you claim “waterproof” in marketing, you need substantiation. Per FTC guidelines, all product claims must be truthful, not misleading, and backed by evidence. The same logic applies to terms like “indestructible.”
- Don’t choose Cordura for every job. If someone asks whether modal is better than polyester, those are apparel comfort fabrics—different goals entirely. For rugged goods where abrasion is the risk, Cordura is difficult to match. But for a lightweight hiking mid-layer or a soft duvet cover, Cordura is the wrong tool.
- Don’t accept a random high-denier nylon as a substitute. There are many high-tenacity nylons, and some are manufactured to similar specs. But if your brand promise is “made with Cordura,” then the licensed trademark is part of the product. Your client—and their client—will eventually ask.
Carbon fiber performance parts are another example of high-performance materials that still need thoughtful testing. They can crack if misdesigned; Cordura can abrade if structurally unsupported. The point is to test the final build, not just trust the marketing.
If this checklist feels overly cautious, maybe it is. But I’d rather lose a quote than lose a customer. Using a licensed Cordura source, specifying the exact construction, testing your own process, and checking the whole BOM has saved us far more than the $14,000 it cost me to learn those lessons.
