Cordura Fabric: 1000 Denier vs 500D vs 1680D – A Buyer’s Guide for Backpacks & Apparel

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer for Cordura – it depends on how rough you treat your gear

When people ask me “which Cordura fabric should I buy?” my first response is: what are you going to do to it?   2. How important is weight? For a backpack that will be carried all day, lighter denier (500D) reduces fatigue. For a stationary tool bag, go heavier.
  3. What’s your budget? 500D is cheaper, but if the lifespan difference is 2 years vs 5 years, the 1000D may win on total cost.

If you’re in military procurement or aerospace, your requirements will be different (e.g., you might need MIL-SPEC testing). Cordura publishes ASTM abrasion test data online – use that, not sales hype, to make your decision. As of early 2025, 1000D Cordura typically exceeds 3,000 cycles on the Taber abrasion test (ASTM D3884), while 500D hits about 1,500-2,000. That’s a huge gap, but also means 500D might be plenty if your gear never sees rough surfaces.

Finally, if you’re evaluating other high-performance fabrics like sailcloth or Ripstop nylon, just know they each have tradeoffs. Cordura’s advantage is its long track record – brands have trusted it for over 50 years. Not flashy, but reliable. And in my job, reliability is worth paying for.
